Every day, millions of people wake up and evaluate their appearance by looking in the mirror and asking themselves, “Am I happy with the way I look?” Over 60% of these people answer this question with a firm “no.” I believe there is a better and healthier question to ask, “How can I improve the things I do not like about the way I look?”

You know what I’ve discovered? Transforming the negative thoughts we have about our image can lead to practical ways of improving how we look. This positive question has the added benefit of initiating actions to develop the right image we want to project.

One morning I decided to improve the way I thought about how I look. As a child growing up, I hated the mole on the right side of my face. It continued to get bigger as I grew up. I kept arguing with my mother that I would be liked better and look better, if I could remove my mole. If I removed my mole, then life would be so much better. I even thought about going in our pasture and pulling out a hair from one of our horses – tale from an old myth.

When I mentioned this plan to my mother, her response was a basic “Okay.”
I was expecting another warm conversation, convincing me that I was normal. However, the short answer prompted me to think. “What was actually wrong with my mole?” “What was wrong with being different?” Having no definite answer, I just had to basically “get over it?”

Now I believe that any defect or dislike we have can be the stepping stones to like and appreciate what we do have. Why? Because it can force you to learn more about what you are feeling and why you are feeling this way. When you understand what has prompted you to dislike how you look, you can begin to make a decision that works for your image.

What often happens, in contrast, is the dislike leads you to insult yourself. Someone may compliment you on your shoes. Instead of a “Thank You”, you respond “What, these old things? I have had them for years.”

Inevitably, four aspects will infect your self-esteem and you image, leaving strain on your relationships and you job. These four aspects are:
- Withdrawing for a social atmosphere because of how you look.
- Belittling yourself because of your “flaws.”
- Seeing too many negative things about how you look.
- Escalating small flaws into major handicaps.

After many years of dealing with people and the way they look, I have finally realized that the greatest antidote to these four aspects – and the greatest thing we can do to build a positive image – was to appreciate what we have. Take a look at the following three steps to discovering how to build a positive image, and you will see how they counteract these four aspects.

Step #1. Make a determined decision that you are highly valuable. All of your differences, - personality, looks, interests, opinions, etc - are priceless. You are put together this way to enhance society. You are here for a purpose. The way you look adds to this purpose.

Step #2. Start making a list today of all the positive things you like about the way you look. Write down the things you love about the way you look, the things you really appreciate. This principle comes from Philippians 4:8, which teaches us to focus on “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right…”

As you begin to make yourself analyze positive aspects of you image almost every day, you start looking for ways to improve how you look. The more you seek it, the more obvious it becomes.
Step#3. Tell yourself everyday in the mirror how you love the way you look. Make it a habit to praise yourself on your image. Use cards or sticky notes in your car and on the mirror.

Some of you may be saying and thinking, “I can’t do this. I can’t think of anything positive.” If you can’t tell yourself how great you look, then why should your spouse or friends? You have the power to change how people look at you. Start today.

I was in It's All About U Consignment Shop Off of North State Street the other day, browsing the merchandise for clients. I discovered a dress that was fit for any occasion. She had a gorgeous 100% silk dress, which was secretly calling my name... Cassandra....Cassandra ... buy me...!

The only thing stopping me from buying the dress was the size, not the price. I so desperately wanted to purchase the dress and take extreme measures to drop four dress sizes ASAP.

Choosing a hotel this weekend in New Orleans taught me a profound lesson that I wanted to share. We were attending a wedding, and there was a hotel being used. Well, I did research and decided that we could stay in a hotel in the same area for a cheaper rate. Was this the smart thing to do?

Well, once we arrived in New Orleans, we didn't have time to check in the hotel. We went straight to the dress rehearsal. Exhausted from the busy day, we arrived at our destination. The hotel was down the street from the main area. There was nothing functional around it. Barbed wire surrounded it like the confines of a state correctional facility. Trying to get to the hotel, we turned on the street right before it. Behind the hotel was nothing but a concrete slab. Just beyond the slab was an abandoned apartment complex (so it appeared).

Seeing the occupants with their doors open, a man walking around the cars (as if checking car tags), and the condition of the hotel, we immediately recognized that maybe this wasn't the place for us.

Going into the hotel lobby, I smelled a distinct smell. I can't put a finger on it, but it was very peculiar. Waiting in line, I watch the interaction between the employee and the potential client. The client did not want to give personal information, and he was paying with cash. He seemed really suspicious. Watching the occupants walk through the lobby to their room confirmed my suspicions even more.

With that being said, I cancelled my reservation. We ended up at the hotel assigned for the wedding. We were so relieved to see it, and we had a wonderful time.

The moral lesson is:

The image of a business, its clients, and its employees affects the bottom line. I cancelled my reservation based on the appearance of the outside of the hotel, the hotel occupants, the potential clients, and the tattooed employee to determine if the hotel was befitting of my family and I. We never saw the rooms, which could have been exactly the way we wanted them to look. We never gave that a chance.

Image is important in every aspect of life. It affects the customers of a business, the bottom line of a business, the reputation of a business, and the brand of a business. Being aware of the landscape of the business and the appearance of the employees demands an air of respect from customers and potential customers.

To measure for your bra band, keep the tape measure even and measure underneath your bust. It is important to make sure the tape measure is just right. This is very important to your support. Write down your measurements. If the number is even add 4", and if it is odd add ".

To measure the cup size: make sure you are standing up straight. Measure at the fullest part of the bust area. It is helpful to have a friend to do this measurement for you.

To calculate your bra size, subtract your bra band size from your cup size.

For each inch difference the cup size goes up by one.

1 cup sweet almond, olive, or sesame oil
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup liquid soap
1tablespoon vanilla extract

Place oil into a bowl, then carefully stir in remaining ingredients
until fully blended. Store in a clean plastic bottle and shake before
using. Add to running bathwater.

Shopping is one of my favorite activities. I love to "collect" shoes, clothes, and purses. I am working on having a very extravagant collection one day. This weekend was very successful for shopping. I found wonderful deals! My first stop was Shoe Carnival. I really feel that this store is a really little known secret. From having "Family and Friends" Day to providing a great selection of shoes for the entire family, no matter what time of year, you can always leave with a great bargain. On Thursday, I purchased a pair of SODA suede flats and DILBA brown and caramel heels. Both pairs were less than 50.00!

On Friday, my next stop was to Francesca's Collection in Dogwood Shopping Center, located in Flowood, MS. I love going straight to their clearance rack. I purchased a great geometric A -line skirt for 9.98.

I didn't forget to stop by Shoe Dept to return a pair of gorgeous brown heels that hurt my feet sooooo bad. In exchange for these shoes, I found a great pair of Nine West slingbacks. I was so excited to find them in a size 11 and on sale!

My last stop was New York and Company. Since I am on their email list, I decided to take advantage of one of the many coupons I receive from them on a daily basis. The experience was draining at first. My initial encounter with a sales associate almost discouraged me from trying on and purchasing anything, but I asked for the manager on duty. She was so helpful and knowledgeable that it was a understandable why she was the manager there! I was able to get a great pair of brown slacks for buy one get one 75% off. I then hit the clearance rack up and find another great pair of black pants and a red shoulder handbag. To finish up the trip, I purchased a burgundy wide belt (my signature accessory) and a brown trouser belt.

I was really proud of the success I had this weekend shopping for myself. It was so phenomenal. Most of the time it is really easy to find things for others and not myself.

I had an emergency situation. I was the presenter at the Mississippi Association of Colleges and Employers 2009 conference on Friday, July 24, 2009. On Thursday, July 23,2009, a meet and greet reception was being held. After I arrived at the hotel and checked in, I rushed to my designated room. Placing my luggage and other personal items in their assigned positions, I proceeded to put my Mary Kay lotion on my legs. Then, the inevitable happened. The second button from the bottom of my cute linen shirt dress popped off and landed on the carpet. I gasp. It was already 7:15. The reception started at 7:00. Trying not to panic, I reached for my iPhone. Of course, it came to my rescue. I searched for the nearest Cato. Cato always have clearance sales on in season items. The nearest one was only 10 miles away.

Filled with excitement, I hopped into my car and drove to find Cato. Once I was there, I knew where to go. I just had to figure out what side the plus sizes are on and what side the misses are on. At this store, the plus side was to my left, and the misses side was to my right. I immediately ran to the clearance racks on the misses side. I found a cotton, button-down light green shirt. The sale tag was labeled $7.99. It matched the A-line skirt I was going to wear for my presentation, so I picked it as a backup plan. The shirt I had designated for my presentation outfit was white. I knew I had to have more options. White clothing and I just don't get alone. Then I looked for a bottom. I didn't see anything. Getting a little frustrated, I ran to the plus size section. Scrummaging through the clearance rack of dresses and suits, I found my rescue outfit. I saw a black dress with flower details at the bottom. It was labeled $19.99. The black sheath style dress was just my size and price. In the plus size section, I always go down a size from what I would wear in the misses section.

Overhearing one of the customer service representative explaining that all the dressing rooms were full to another customer, I hurried to the cash register. I explained to the cashier, who happened to be the manager of Cato in Olive Branch, that I was in a hurry and I needed to change into the dress. I asked her, if I could just find a spot in the corner to change. She explained to me that she would allow me to use the employee restroom. She cut all the tags, and she showed me where to go. I put the dress on and returned to the counter to get my shirt. She said after she cut the tags off and sent me to the restroom. She became worried that the dress wouldn't fit. I shared with her that once you know what style clothing works with your body type and what doesn't work, shopping becomes a breeze.

Your stride slows when you reach a stopping point along one of the many isles cluttered with fabulous handbags, A nicely colored leather handbag with gold metal rivets at the bottom screams for you to purchase it. Immediately, you scope up your new prized possession and stroll confidently to the cash register.

Excited about your new purchase, you discover clothing in your wardrobe, which complements the handbag just right. After you have worn it a couple of times, you find it necessary to retire the handbag to its rightful place in your closet. Instead of leaving it stuffed away on a shelf or in a box in your closet, you should take extra precautions to ensure that your favorite and most prized handbag is in top shape.

Knowing exactly how to maintain the lustrous appearance of your handbags permits a longer life for each handbag. The bottom inside of handbags guzzles dirt and other debris. The brush attachment from your vaccum cleaner or a lint roller brush can clean away the debris in the interior of your handbag. Zipper teeth on a handbag may become dull and hard to zip up. Rub a piece of natural beeswax over the zipper’s teeth to keep them working smoothly.

Finding a local shoe repair or bag repair shop can soothe your worries and often provide answers for your handbag anxiety. Local bag and shoe repair shops replate hardware to cover flaws, like metal cracks and deep scratches. Leather conditioning cream is a great investment purchased from a shoe repair shop and helps to maintain the appearance of a leather handbag. Purchase a neutral shoe polish to add a little shine to any color leather handbag. Make sure you apply the polish with a soft piece of fabric like cheesecloth, then clean the polish off using the dry piece of the cheesecloth.

In addition, the bottom of your handbag should be maintained. Protect the bottom of your handbag by having a repair shop add feet. Feet are metal rivets placed into the base of your handbag, creating a more stable base.

Patent leather handbags should be well maintained just as the leather handbags. Use a clean piece of cheesecloth, dipped in white vinegar to clean patent leather handbags. Remove vinegar with the clean and dry section of the same cheesecloth fabric.

If your handbag did not come with a flannel dust-bag, place your handbags in cotton pillowcases before placing them in a bin or box. When you are not using your handbag, sustain the shape by placing bubble wrap or tissue paper in the inside. Taking these simple steps can extend the life of your favorite handbag.

Clean your boots clean. Look for products, which are specifically designed to clean your leather, suede, or rubber boots. Boots wear out faster, if dirt and grime are not removed. Remember to moisturize your leather boots once you clean them.
Protect your boots. Look for products, which seal in the moisture and protect your boots from the elements.
Spray your boots. Repel stains and keep your boots looking new by spraying them. Maintain their lustrous appearance.
Allow your boots to dry naturally. Don't try to use a hairdryer to speed up the drying process. Drying your boots naturally allow them to return to their previous condition. Leave them in a warm room to dry.
Take your boots to a shoe repair shop. Allow a shoe repair shop to check the sole of your boots and to maintain the taps on your boots.

Place all shoes in shoe boxes. For shoes that no longer have a shoe box, purchase clear plastic shoe boxes. Take photos of shoes and tape each photo to each corresponding shoe box. Place off-season shoes in hard to reach areas of your closet. Keep shoes that you wear often in close proximity. Stack shoes according to style and/or color. Create a shoe system to help manage your shoes. Discard use that cannot be repaired or that no longer deserve to reside in a shoe box. Celebrate the accomplishment of organizing your shoes.

Wearing winter white can be a flattering color. It helps add richness to any wardrobe. Winter-white wool pants look elegant with sweaters, which a jewel tone or a brown shirt. White denim looks great with a layered look. Pair white denim with a cotton shirt and a blazer looks well put together. Mix white in any winter outfit. White sweater dresses work great with dark-colored opaque tights. However, avoid wearing white leggings or white tights. Wearing white after Labor Day is only a faux pas, when you stick out like a sore thumb.
